Kayaking/ CanoeingYou might not think of kayaking as a big sport here. After all, some of the rivers are unclean and not ideal for paddling. On calmer days, though, the seas surrounding Taiwan become a fabulous place for kayaking or canoeing. Long, streamlined touring kayaks provide the opportunity for exercise and relaxation, with solitude you won't find on shore. Plus, it's exhilarating to look at the island from out on the water and explore coastline that's tough to access from land. Shalun Beach in Danshui is a good launching area for sea ventures. Also, there are some nicer river areas with cleaner waters that are frequented by kayakers. Some good river spots for kayaking or canoeing are the Beishi River in Pinglin and the Nanshi River in Wulai. Dry Tops/ Semi Dry Tops: Specifically designed for paddling pursuits, these tops block out cold, salty or dirty water but stretch with your movements and allow moisture to escape from the inside. Helmets: An absolute necessity for river kayaking, a kayaking helmet is designed to protect from collisions with river rocks. Not necessary for gentle ocean excursions. Sprayskirts: Sprayskirts are designed to form a tight seal to protect you from water entry in a sit-in kayak. These accessories make kayaking a much more enjoyable experience, because nobody wants to sit in a pool of cool water all day. If you prefer a sit-on-top kayak, a sprayskirt is not required - but expect to get wet! Kayak Accessories: Drybags, gloves and other kayak accessories can all make a day of kayaking more fun and prevent potential headaches.
