Taipei's air quality can be poor, thanks to the many successful local factories and the high population density. Take a break from gas-powered vehicles and give a clean-running road bike a chance.
Road cycling provides the opportunity for excitement, fitness, and meeting other people - all without increasing pollution. In fact, Taiwan has over 60 singles clubs that set up weekend bicycling excursions to different parts of the island. Head for the Danshui River in Taipei, stopping as you go for refreshments at a 7-11. Or participate in a ride at the Black Forest or Kuanshan Village in Taitung, where fresh air is always in your face. Taiwan's best months to get out on a road bike are October through December.
